The golf professionals do have something that they agree on.  If you do not keep your balance during the entire swing, it is not possible to have a good stroke.  It sounds simple to keep your balance, doesn’t it?  Unfortunately, it is impossible to have good balance when you are so tense that you are “white knuckling” the club, your entire body is stiff, and you are trying to hit the ball too hard.

When you are just starting to play golf, you are frequently warned to not hit the ball too hard.  Energy that is focused will make the ball go much further than a hard swing that does not make contact with the ball at the club’s center.  When you are well balanced, you are more free to hit the ball correctly.

Keep your head still, with your eyes focused on the ball.  The more still your head is, the better you will be able to see the ball.  This helps to create the foundation for you to keep your balance.  Any movement or distraction that hinders your balance will make it impossible to focus on the ball.  It is imperative that you keep your head perfectly still and do not move it during your swing.

If you want to keep your balance, you need to relax your body and muscles.  If you don’t relax, then your head is going to move.

If you will watch yourself in front of your mirror, you will soon realize that you need to relax your muscles for your head to stay still while you swing.  No two golfers have the same build, so you will have to figure out some things for yourself.  It is a necessity to begin by keeping your head in the same position from the beginning to end of your swing.  If you keep your head still, you will be able to focus on the ball, and you will turn your hands at the right time.

You will be able to cure many of your problems just by keeping your head completely still.  It will be impossible to incorrectly grip your club without losing your balance and moving your head.

If you don’t follow through correctly, you will not be able to keep your balance.

If you concentrate on your balance and keeping your head still, then you will not swing too hard or pull your club away.  It will be impossible to put too much strength into your swing.  You will be relaxed and will have a smooth swing and a successful finish.

Keeping your balance is necessary for you to enjoy a great game of golf.  It will take time for you to see definite improvement, so be patient.  Concentrate on keeping your balance and your head in one place and in no time you will be enjoying an excellent golf game that your friends will be envious of!

This brief article reveals three mental golf tips utilizing a cutting-edge technique known as “tapping”.

What is Tapping?

“Tapping” is a do-it-yourself form of acupuncture that we use for golf psychology, except you don’t use needles. Instead you simply “tap” on a few “clearing points” while focusing on and saying (to yourself, if appropriate) the negative feeling or emotion.

For the sake of simplicity, the following golf tips will only use a single point, referred to as the “collar bone point”. Golf Tips # 1 – “Tapping” in your Pre-shot Routine

Tap while focusing on any negative feeling or emotion you might have about the upcoming shot.

If you don’t have anything in particular, just use the term “tension”.

Take a deep breath and say to yourself “Let it be easy”.

Step up and swing the club.

Golf Tips # 2 – “Tapping” in your Post-shot Routine

What…you don’t have a post-shot routine? That’s the subject for another article. For now we’ll keep it simple and divide your shot results into either positive or negative.

1. If the shot ended up where you intended (Positive) -

Simply tap and say “Exactly”, “Spot on”, “Nice”, or any other positive phrase indicating to yourself that you manifested the intended result.

2. If the shot did NOT play out as planned (Negative) -

Tap and say “Anger”, “Frustration”, or whatever emotion the less-than-perfect shot brings up.

Take a deep breath.

Say to yourself “This is more what I had in mind”….

And then take another easy practice stroke and visualize the ball going exactly where you intended.

This is very important because it will plant in your subconscious mind this more positive result.

Golf Tips # 3 – “Tapping” for Anger Management

Is there any activity on earth that people love to hate more than golf?

Any time that you feel anger on the course, just tap and say “anger”, “pissed off” or whatever best describes your feelings (and is somewhat appropriate given your environment).

Take a deep breath.

The Ping Golf Club: An Overview

The Truth About Golf and the Zone

The Zone – it is the Holy Grail of all athletes in every sport…the elusive mind/body state in which everything comes together.

Golfers describing the experience of being “in the zone” usually sound like this:

“Everything felt so easy”

“My swing was so fluid”

“I knew exactly what to do”

Etc, Etc.

Ah yes…all golfers have had this experience. Some for only a moment or two, some for an entire round or even a weekend tournament.

But what is The Zone, anyway?

How do we get there and STAY there?

There are certainly plenty of theories postulated by PhDs in sports psychology as to the exact biochemical happenings in the brain and nervous system during “zone time”.

They even hook golfers up with electrodes and monitor a plethora of information and biofeedback data. This is all done to assist these golfers in their quest for the Holy Grail…The Zone.

Although it would be kind to assume that these Ivory Tower theorists have the best intentions, my gut tells me that it is usually more a case of “intellectual masturbation”.

Regardless, the whole thing really reminds me of Monty Python and The Holy Grail.

In other words, a fruitless endeavor doomed to failure because it is based on inane premises and therefore produces deluded conclusions.

However, it does provide a decent amount of comic relief, at least for me.

OK, so maybe I’m exaggerating (but just a little bit).

The quest to somehow evoke the Zone state and maintain it is misguided by most people because it is seen as a foreign destination – a state of being outside of the golfer’s natural mind/body state.

Here’s the big news …drum roll please…the Zone is your natural state of being.

That’s right – The Zone is NOT a state of being that you have to “get into” and then hope and pray that you stay there.

Rather, The Zone is your true state of mental and physical being. It is the place to which you return when you are finally able to eliminate and clear the specific impediments to your natural freedom state.

These impediments include (but are not limited to):

o The voice of your “inner critic” (does it EVER shut up?)

o Self doubt

o Fear

o Tension

o Comfort Zones

o Anger

o Etc., etc.

Feel free to add your own to the list.

The important point is that these issues keep you from LIVING in The zone, both on and off the course.

The key is to “clear” or “eliminate” these issues… and then…viola…you are in The Zone.

After a relatively short period of time, The Zone will start to feel normal, because it is indeed your natural state of being.

There are many tools, methods, and techniques that different people have found useful in clearing these types of issues. They include everything from meditation and prayer to traditional talk therapy.

Hell, if you listen to the top grossing movie stars, even Scientology!

As a professional mental golf training coach, I’ve become known for my use of energy psychology to break through barriers and assist golfers in slashing strokes off their handicap. But energy psychology is only one of the renegade tools that I utilize with my golfers to maximize their performance. I’ve also been trained by several Master NLP Practitioners, and get great results with techniques like anchoring.

What is an anchor?

An anchor is formed when an internal response becomes associated with an external stimulus. Think Pavlov and his salivating dogs..

Hear A Bell = Salivate

Anchoring yourself is very easy to do. But because anchors can be positive or negative, and programed with or without your conscious awareness, it’s to your advantage to set them deliberately.

Here’s how to do it:

When ever you smash an awesome drive or stroke the perfect putt, you are momentarily in what we call a “peak state”. Immediately, perform some kind of unique action – say a specific phrase, snap your fingers twice, blink your eyes three times quickly, etc. The keys are that you do it right away, and that it be unique enough that it’s not something you do all the time.

After completing this process several times, you will have anchored that action and that peak state. The cool thing is that you can then perform that action (anchor) at any time on the course, and put yourself right back into that peak state. This will greatly enhance your chances of performing well – we all kick more butt when in peak states.

A great time to set anchors is out on the practice range. Simply hit a shot, and see how the result feels. Obviously, anchor in only the really good shots.

This practice range environment is ideal because you get the repetition necessary for setting those solid, positive anchors. Then go out and use them on the course to achieve and maintain your peak states. Simply “activate” your new anchor (by performing the unique action) as part of your pre-shot routine, or anytime (on or off the course) when your need to be at your best.
